Contest Every Race Celebrates Democratic Wins in Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina, Plans to Expand Rural Organizing Support in ‘24 Cycle
The 2023 elections brought a wave of Democratic victories in areas traditionally seen as Republican strongholds. Contest Every Race is proud to announce significant wins in Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia, underscoring the impact of our early investments in long-term organizing infrastructure.
Key results we’re tracking:
- Franklinton, NC re-elected their Democratic Mayor by one vote. The Franklin County Democratic Party received support from Contest Every Race for get out the vote efforts.
- In Clark County, Ohio, where Trump won 60% of the vote, a slim majority of voters voted in support of protecting abortion access, with 50.5% in support of Issue 1 and 49.5% against. Our grantee, the Clark County Democratic Party, gathered thousands of signatures to put reproductive freedom on the ballot. With Contest Every Race’s support they registered voters, knocked thousands of doors, made calls, distributed hundreds of yard signs and stickers and had the tough conversations that built strong coalitions.
- In Champaign County, Ohio, a long-time republican resident reached out to Heather Tiefenhaler, chair of Champaign County Democrats, to request “Vote Yes on Issue 1” yard signs to display on her own property. Then she even offered to volunteer to get Republican women to vote yes on Issue 1, pouring over soil and water district plot lines to find addresses of voters with no address listed elsewhere. In 2020, only 25% of voters supported Biden in Champaign County but 42% voted Yes on Issue 1.
- In Virginia, where Democrats swept Tuesday’s legislative elections and retook full control of the General Assembly, we’re celebrating a red to blue flip in House District 84, a semi-rural district outside Norfolk. Our grantee in this district, Chesapeake Democratic Committee, knocked thousands of doors and utilized our texting services to get out the vote.
